ISO 17100:2015

 

ISO 17100:2015 is an international standard for translation services, which provides requirements for the core processes, resources, and other aspects necessary for delivering a quality translation service.

 Core Components:

  • Human Resources:
    • Qualifications and Competencies: Translators, revisers, and reviewers must have appropriate qualifications, typically a degree in translation or related field, and proven experience.
    • Continuous Professional Development (CPD): Ensure ongoing training and development for staff.
  • Technical Resources:
    • Translation Technology: Utilize appropriate tools such as CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools, terminology databases, and project management software.
  • Pre-production Processes:
    • Client Agreement: Clearly define and document the scope of the translation project, including deliverables, timelines, and specific client requirements.
    • Project Preparation: Analyze the source text, prepare glossaries, and set up translation memories.
  • Production Processes:
    • Translation Process: Follow a structured approach to translation, ensuring consistency and accuracy.
    • Revision: A second qualified translator must review the translation for accuracy and completeness.
    • Review: Additional quality checks for certain projects, as required by the client or the complexity of the project.
    • Proofreading: Final review for any errors, usually performed after layout/formatting.
  • Post-production Processes:
    • Final Verification: Ensure the translated text meets all client requirements and standards.

DEVELOPING A COMPLIANT PROCESS

  • Step-by-Step Process:
    • Project Initiation:
      • Receive project request from the client.
      • Conduct a needs analysis to understand the client’s requirements.
      • Provide a detailed quote and get client agreement.
    • Resource Allocation:
      • Assign a project manager (PM) to oversee the project.
      • Select qualified translators, revisers, and proofreaders from a vetted pool.
    • Project Preparation:
      • PM to create a detailed project plan.
      • Prepare and share relevant resources (glossaries, style guides, translation memories).
    • Translation:
      • Translator performs the initial translation, using CAT tools where applicable.
      • Translator self-reviews the translation for initial quality assurance.
    • Revision:
      • A second translator revises the translated text, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
    • Review and Proofreading:
      • Conduct additional reviews if necessary, based on project complexity and client requirements.
      • Final proofreading to catch any remaining errors post-formatting.
    • Final Verification and Delivery:
      • PM verifies the final translation against the project specifications.
      • Deliver the completed translation to the client.
      • Conduct a post-delivery review meeting with the client, if necessary.
    • Feedback and Improvement:
      • Collect client feedback through surveys or direct communication.
      • Analyze feedback and implement improvements in the process.

DOCUMENTATION AND RECORDS

  • Maintain Records: Keep comprehensive records of all projects, including client communications, project plans, resource allocations, and final deliverables.
  • Quality Management System (QMS): Implement a QMS that complies with ISO 17100, incorporating all documented procedures, templates, and checklists.
